When it comes to your first baby the excitement of picking the buggy or clothing sometimes overshadows the choice of mattress. As it’s one of the most important purchases for your newborn we decided to run through some of the features available and differences between them…

Newborns sleep a lot – typically up to 16 to 17 hours a day. But most babies don’t stay asleep for more than two to three hours at a time, day or night, during the first few weeks of life.

An important aid for this is having a comfortable mattress for your baby that will also help their little bodies develop in the right way.

There are 5 main sizes of baby mattresses available on the market. Within each, there are a lot more specific sizes but for the moment we will focus on the main ones. (always ensure you measure your sleep product to ensure you purchase the correct size and if in doubt contact your retailer first or ensure to keep the mattress in the packaging when testing it in your cot, etc, so you have the option to return if it doesn’t fit).

In general, you will find that the mattresses to fit your Moses basket, Crib or travel cot will be between 2.5 – 5cm in depth. The reason for this is to reduce the distance between the top of the mattress and the top of the side rails to help avoid your baby from pulling themselves up in the first 6 months.

Your cot and cot bed sizes in general range from 8cm – 10cm in depth. All Baby Elegance cot and cot bed mattresses are designed at 10cm deep to offer maximum support to your baby.

When choosing a mattress it is very important to ensure your mattress complies to the relevant safety standards for the UK and European rules.

This consists of but not limited to the BS7177 for fire safety and the BE EN 16890 for the structure of the mattress itself.

At Baby Elegance we have been manufacturing mattresses for over 35 years and are proud to say all of our mattresses are fully compliant with the highest standards.

We are delighted to have teamed up with Lucy Wolfe to share her sleep expertise and experience in the parenting sector, in order to create mattresses that tick’s every box.

Styles of Mattress Core

With the mattress styles below you will hear us discuss the different cores of the mattress. This is what the main structure of the mattress is created with and gives the mattress the structure.

At Baby Elegance we have three main styles of core:

Fibre

The fibre cores are made using polyester fibre which is woven back and forth on itself to create a pad. This pad is firm enough to support your baby’s body development yet offers enough comfort to allow them to get a good sleep.

All of the polyester fibre pads at Baby Elegance are anti-allergy pads and are made in Ireland.

Pocket Spring

The pocket spring cores are only available in cot and cot bed size. They are designed by first creating a box using polyester pads. We then insert rows of individually pocketed springs into the box and seal it up using a comfortable layer of fibre to the top and the bottom of the mattress.

The reason we use pocket springs instead of standard springs is that pocket sprung mattresses offer more support than open coiled. The individual springs that make up the mattress are housed in their own little pockets and work independently of each other. This offers your baby full body support and leaves no gaps under their bodies while they develop.

The pocket spring mattresses also offer this support for the entire use until you are finished with a cot bed meaning they can be used from birth to roughly four years of age.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses have been getting some bad press over the past few years however most of the negatives only come into play with adult beds due to the higher amount of sweating an adult does when sleeping.

With babies, we don’t have such an issue. The Baby Elegance memory foam cores are designed using 2 parts normal foam and 1 part memory foam. The standard foam offers the structure needed for the mattress and then the layer of memory foam offers the comfort element to the core. The cover on the Memory foam mattress is very important and we will discuss that further below.

At Baby Elegance, we have options available in various sizes…

Eco Fibre

The Eco Mattress offers superb value for money and is made from a strong pad of polyester fibre. This offers good breathability to the mattress and is also anti-allergy. The cover can be removed for washing and this is fitted with a safety zipper so is only removable with the use of a tool such as a paper clip etc to release the catch. The cover can be washed at 30 degrees and hung dry.

The Eco is available in Moses, Crib, Travel Cot, Cot and Cot Bed sizes.

It is also available in pocket spring in the cot and cot bed sizes.

Micro Fibre

Our Micro Fibre Mattress combines the strength of anti-allergy fibre pads with the comfort and softness of the Micro Fibre cover. Bevels in the cover create an air pocket, ensuring comfort for a great night’s sleep. This mattress is made using anti-allergy fibre pads for extra strength and features a removable and washable cover.

This mattress is available in Cot and Cot bed sizes and is available in Fibre and pocket spring in bother sizes also.

HeathCare

Healthcare Fibre is our newest breakthrough in our ongoing quest to make mattresses as safe and comfortable for your baby as possible.
This mattress has been created using the newest technology Wellcare Protect fibres. The all-natural process of dehydrating the fibres ensures the mattress is biocide-free, making this one of the safest options in terms of allergy prevention.

The cover is removable and washable also and is fitted with a safety zip.

This range is available in Moses, Crib, Travel Cot, Cot and Cot Bed sizes.

It is also available in pocket spring in the cot and cot bed sizes.

Memory Foam

Our Memory Foam Mattresses are made using a hi-tech material that softens in response to your baby’s body heat and moulds to your baby’s shape. This provides greater support by reducing pressure points and increasing comfort by providing a cushioned sleeping surface.

The cover is made of a polyester blend that allows the body heat to escape to help ensure your baby does not overheat throughout the night.

The cover is removable and washable also and is fitted with a safety zip.

This range is available in Moses, Cot and Cot Bed sizes.

Breathe-Dry

The Baby Elegance Breather-Dry mattress collection combines a waterproof inner cover with superior breathability removable washable outer cover. Due to the design of this mattress, it allows you to wipe down the inner cover keeping the core dry and hygienic should your little one have any mishaps through the night.

The outer cover is designed using a honeycomb structure proving a mass of airflow between your baby and the mattress.

The cover is removable and washable also and is fitted with a safety zip.

It is available in fibre in cot and cot bed and also pocket spring in the cot and cot bed sizes.

Options to Choose From

As you can see from this there are a few options to choose from in mattresses however it is important to remember to think about what you would like from the mattress in terms of features and core.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself before picking the mattress:

  • What size do I need? This will determine what options are available to you.
  • How long will my baby be in that sleep product? If it’s a small cot for example then maybe the pocket spring option in unnecessary for the time the baby will be using it.
  • What is the airflow like in my baby’s nursery? If there isn’t much air circulating the room then maybe a more breathable core or cover would be a good option.
  • is it waterproof? Babies have accidents, that’s for sure! So would you like to go for the Breathe-Dry or maybe add a protector to one of the other options?
  • What about allergies? Are there members of your family who are prone to suffering from allergies? This might lead you towards the Healthcare version.
